V. Monetizing Your Blog

Now you have a well set up blog with automated content it is time to monetize your blog. This means adding your affiliate links and AdSense adverts in prominent positions so that visitors to your blog with see and click them.

We have already monetized your blog somewhat by adding an affiliate link at the beginning and end of each post automatically. First we’ll begin to add AdSense to your blog. If you don’t already have an AdSense account go and get one now. If you applied and were rejected for some reason just skip this part. While you can make a little money with AdSense it’s on the low end of the scale - you will make much more with your affiliate links so don’t worry too much if you can’t use AdSense.

a. How To Add AdSense

Before we add AdSense to your blog there are a couple of things you shouldn’t do once AdSense becomes visible.

  • Don’t click on any of your own AdSense adverts.
  • Don’t ask visitors to click on the AdSense adverts.

Doing either of these things will get you banned from Google AdSense and they are very quick to sniff out wrongdoings. Once banned you will not be allowed to open another AdSense account and any monies they owed you (even from legitimate clicks) will be forfeited.

With that said we can now add AdSense to your blog.

To begin you will need to install a plugin called WP Simple AdSense Insertion. This installs just like plugins we installed earlier so I won’t go through the procedure step by step again. Once you have installed and activated WP Simple AdSense Insertion you will see an option by the same name in the Settings box.

wordpress-41

You should come to the page above with three empty boxes for AdSense codes.

We, however, will only be using one. Leave this page open and log into your AdSense account.
https://www.google.com/adsense/home

You will see four tabs at the top of the page – Reports, AdSense Setup, My Account and Resources. Right now we want to deal with AdSense Setup so click that tab.

From the options above choose AdSesne for Content.

On the next screen choose Ad Unit – Text and image ads. This is the default option so you can just click the Continue >> button.

There are many options on this page to choose. Select the choices I have highlighted below.

Format: 468x60 Banner.
Colors: Default Google Palette.
Font: Account Default (for both choices).
Corner Styles: Square Corners.
Alternative Ads or Colors: Show Public Service Ads.

When you have made these selections click Continue >>.

wordpress-43

The next page will be Choose Ad Channels. You can skip this page and press Continue >>. Finally you can click Submit and Get Code to get your AdSense code.

You should come to a page like the one below. In the following example I have edited the coding to protect the privacy of my AdSense account.

wordpress-44

Copy this AdSense code and go back to the Simple AdSense Insertion page in the admin section of your blog that we let behind earlier.

You can now paste this code into the AdSense Ad Campaign 1 Code box and click Update options >> to save this change.

Now go back to the WP-o-Matic settings.

Click Campaigns and then Edit. You should now be on the campaign you created earlier. From here click on the Options tab.

Click the Custom post template to see the code you entered before (you may have to uncheck the box and then check it again to display this code).

wordpress-45

At the end of the code enter <br><br><!-- wp_ad_camp_1 -->. Click on Submit to save this change.

Now whenever your site updates with new content an AdSense advert will appear at the very bottom of the post.

b. Promoting Your Affiliate Links

As it currently stands you are already promoting your affiliate links within your posts but there are a couple of other ways you can make your affiliate links visible on your blog.

The first way is to add links to your blogroll. So go to the Links section and then Add New.

Have your affiliate link addresses at the ready.

wordpress-46

There are quite a few options here but we only need to focus on the first five.

Name: Choose a name for you link like “Learn Hypnosis” or “Hypnosis MP3s”, something that accurately describes the site you are linking to.
Web Address: Here’s where you enter your affiliate link.
Description: You can enter a brief description of the link here, although this is not required.
Categories: Click the Blogroll option.
Target: Choose “_blank”.

When you have done click the blue Add Link button on the right hand side. You will need to go through this process for both of your affiliate links.

After you have finished you should see these links on either the left or right hand side of your blog depending on what theme/template you are using.

You can also add your affiliate links to your top navigation bar. Even better is that you mask the fact they actually go to another website.
To do this click on the Pages option on the left hand side of the page and then click Add New.

wordpress-47

Choose a title for your link such as Hypnosis Store. You can leave the content box empty.

In the box below entitled Quick Page/Post Redirect (this will only be there if you installed the plugin mentioned in the earlier section) tick the top option Make Redirect Active and leave the rest unchecked.

Underneath the Redirect URL title, enter your affiliate link and choose 301 Permanent as your type of redirect. That is all the information you need to enter. When you have done this click the blue Update Page button. Again, you will need to do this for both your HypnoBusters and Underground Hypnosis affiliate links.
